Join Planet Texas 2050's annual symposium, Feb. 24 to Feb. 27, 2025. Through multiple presentation formats and opportunities for dialogue and exchange, the symposium will explore diverse and intersecting aspects of resilience. Presenters from multiple universities representing more than 20 academic disciplines will be joined by practitioners and community-based leaders from Austin and beyond.

This year, we welcome Dr. Jonathan Gilligan (Vanderbilt) for a keynote lecture on expanding the disciplinary range of teaching, scholarship, and artistic expression responding to environmental change. A new addition in 2025 is a one-day summit on February 24th organized by faculty and graduate students in UT’s College of Fine Arts focused on the intersection of the arts, climate change, and community resilience. We’ve teamed up with other campus partners including the UT-City Climate CoLabLBJ’s Extreme Weather Adaptation LabTexas Exes Sustainability Alumni NetworkEnergy Institutethe Texas Science Festival and more to bring you an exciting schedule of research talks, panel discussions, workshops, performances and more! Monday, Feb. 24

  • Hands-on upcycled artmaking workshop
  • aqueous Waller Creek + Papakō: The Journey performances
  • Film screening and discussion with Kelly Ashton Todd
  • Panel and roundtable conversations on collaborating for climate resilience and sustainability in artistic practice and presentation  

Tuesday, Feb. 25

  • Keynote from Dr. Jonathan Gilligan (Vanderbilt University)
  • Panel discussion with organizational leaders across Texas and the Extreme Weather Adaptation Lab on building capacity in disaster preparation and response
  • Workshop on bridging diverse perspectives in climate resiliency conversations
  • Conversation between investigative journalist Megan Kimble and LBJ Dean J.R. DeShazo on the climate-driven insurance crisis in Texas and possible solutions

Wednesday, Feb. 26

  • Presentations from collaborative efforts between UT researchers and community-based organizations to improve resilience
  • A.I. and the Clean Energy Revolution panel + networking happy hour with Texas Exes Sustainability Alumni Network 

Thursday, Feb. 27

  • Poetry + story readings in Turrell Skyspace
  • Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders (ARS) and Drama For Schools leaders on creating and researching climate resilience with youth
  • Lightning talks from arts and humanities scholars in the PT2050 + Humanities Institute faculty fellows cohort
  • Research poster session + closing reception
