AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Applied Arts, a unit within UT's College of Fine Arts, is seeking your assistance and engagement to complete their UT Community Earth Day 50 projects.

By collecting the voices and vision of the UT community as a virtual celebration of Earth Day at 50, their goal is to amplify the intentions and collective sustainability within the UT community, to create a space to gather with one another during this time of isolation, and to bear witness to this essential historic date in our nation’s history.

In a utilitarian room made of cinderblocks and plywood, designs from past theater productions—a brilliantly colored dragon mask, wire built into the muscles of a velociraptor—peer down onto a dozen students gathered around the scarred worktables. The students, part of the Texas Applied Arts program in Theatre and Dance, are listening to a presentation about how to delineate the level of the 100-year flood plain for their new interactive exhibit.

“Every day we produce roughly 380 to 410 million tons of carbon dioxide, and we need to do something about this, because it’s so overwhelming,” Swan said. “My goal through each expedition is to reduce over 360 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2025. No matter where you are in the world, the huge amounts of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is a global issue. We are all responsible for this.”
